FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHICAGO, Aug. 31, 2015 – The iO Theater announced today that, effective this Saturday, Sept. 5, the long-running improvised show Whirled News Tonight will move to the venue’s 150-seat Mission Theater as part of iO’s new role producing shows in the space.
Whirled News Tonight began its open run in September 2003 and performed every week in The Del Close Theater (first at iO’s Wrigleyville location and, since last August, in its spacious new home at 1501 N. Kingsbury St.). The show features cast members improvising scenes based on randomly chosen news articles selected by the audience. Hence the show’s motto: “The news is real, everything else is improvised.”
iO Theater owner Charna Halpern praised Whirled News Tonight saying, “The cast is a smart, talented group with an on-stage chemistry you get from performing together every week for over a decade. A big advantage of our new space is the ability to add shows rather than turning audiences away from a packed house, so it’ll be great for people to see them on a new stage.”
The change of venue will be an ambitious challenge for Whirled News Tonight after the show’s director and producer Jason R. Chin died suddenly in January. Cast member Adal Rifai said, “We realize how special this combination of people is that Jason assembled and we want to continue his work and vision.”
Whirled News Tonight performs every Saturday night at 8pm in The Mission Theater at iO Chicago (1501 N. Kingsbury St.). For tickets, call 312-929-2401 or visit ioimprov.com/chicago.
